Black Friday is Buy Nothing Day!

BND08_Red_US.jpg Black Friday is the day retailers traditionally kick off the holiday shopping season with big sales. The overconsumerism of western culture is not sustainable nor good for the environment, therefore, Black Friday is Buy Nothing Day!
Suddenly, we ran out of money and, to avoid collapse, we quickly pumped liquidity back into the system. But behind our financial crisis a much more ominous crisis looms: we are running out of nature... fish, forests, fresh water, minerals, soil. What are we going to do when supplies of these vital resources run low?

There's only one way to avoid the collapse of this human experiment of ours on Planet Earth: we have to consume less.

It will take a massive mindshift. You can start the ball rolling by buying nothing on November 28th. Then celebrate Christmas differently this year, and make a New Year's resolution to change your lifestyle in 2009.

It's now or never!

Toasty Boys Organic Thermal Cotton Boxers for Men

toasty boys.jpg Toasty Boys are organic cotton boxers for men. These boxers keep the "boys" a perfect temperature, according to designer Christopher Anthony.
A mid-thigh THERMAL Boxer Brief that will keep your prized possessions nice and Toasty this Fall/Winter. Fabric is made from 100% Organic Cotton and features the softest, most comfortable Organic Cotton Waistband there is. The waffle weave fabric is knit, slightly, looser then 'old school Thermal' so it stretches and releases just enough heat all the while keeping your "Boys" Toasty INSTEAD of Hot!
Men deserve organic cotton too! Christopher has plans for a bamboo boxer line this spring, as well.

Easy Bloom Plant Sensor Uses Your Computer to Find Garden Plants

easybloom.jpg Ever wondered what plants will grow in your yard? Zone maps aren't very site specific, and they keep changing due to global warming. The EasyBloom Plant Sensor solves all these problems. Just place this gadget in a growing location, whether inside or out, for 24 hours. It will collect data on light, temperature, humidity, and soil moisture. Then plug your Easy Bloom into the USB port on your computer, and it will recommend plants that are perfect for your specific microclimate. The Easy Bloom also can diagnose why certain plants are failing to thrive in your garden or home.  The EasyBloom Plant Sensor makes growing plants easy!

The Best Solar Powered Flashlight: SunNight Solar Task

41E+c1vYuKL._SL500_AA280_.jpg SNS SunLight Solar Task Flashlight is the best solar flashlight I have ever used! The charge lasts a very long time, it is ergonomically designed, and it comes with several levels of illumination.
Developed with the assistance of the Space Alliance Technology Outreach Program, supported by NASA, shaped by specific field work on our prototypes in Africa in the harshest conditions by scientists from the US Department of Energy and funded by research grants from the Rockefeller Foundation -- we offer you the next generation of portable, reliable and environmentally friendly lights for nightly use, for camping and outdoor activities, and a product which should be in every family's emergency preparedness kit.
When not in use, we leave our SNS SunLight Solar Task Flashlight in a sunny windowsill, and it always stays charged (even in low winter lighting).

Thousands of our SunLights have been donated to people who do not have access to electricity throughout the world. The BoGo Light program:

our Buy one/Give one - program has successfully provided lights to many, many thousands of people in the developing world, changing lives because of your purchase and participation. Education, gender equality, safety, security, economic improvement and overall quality of life have been transformed; all because of light. You buy and receive one light, we give a second light to one of our non-profit partners, delivering it to them in the developing world and then providing them $1 per light to offset importation and distribution costs.

Simple Ideas to Reduce Energy Consumption: Thermal Curtains by Eclipse

eclipse curtain.jpg A lot of heat or cool air is lost through the windows in a home. Once simple solution to this problem is to install thermal curtains. Eclipse makes curtains that block out 99% of light, which helps you sleep better, and the curtains reduce window-related energy loss by 75%. It is much cheaper to use a thermal curtain than to replace windows in a home, and they can help reduce the increase in home heating costs predicted for this winter.

The only drawback to Eclipse curtains is they are made from polyester fabric. I am not a fan of synthetic fibers, whether for the environment or my own personal aesthetic. As a final project in an alternative energy class I took in college, I made thermal curtains from felted wool. I would like to see commercially made thermal curtains made from natural fibers.

Clean Car Technology" The Wind Powered Car by Mercedes

Formula-Zero.jpg Imagine it's the year imagine a race car powered by the wind! That's what Mercedes unveiled at the LA Auto Show: The Formula Zero race car. Featuring electric motors, regenerative braking, solar panels on the body, a wind turbine at the nose, and a high-tech sail, emission free racing may be in Formula One's racing future. Of course, the very nature of racing would have to change for this wind-powered car to be successful: fans would have to cheer for both energy efficiency and speed.

TerraCycle has Done it Again! Eco-Friendly School and Office Supplies

ecobinder.jpg We love TerraCycle! Not only does this company create amazing products from upcycled goods, they also make them available in large retailers making them easily accessible to all consumers. TerraCycle has done it again! Available at Office Max, TerraCycle is offering eco-friendly school and office supplies. From pencil cases made from recycled juice pouches to colored pencils made from used newspapers, these products are of high quality and super eco-friendly (except for the manufacture in China). My favorite TerraCycle office product is Banana Paper.
We're not monkeying around when we tell you that this paper is made from banana peels! Every year, four billion trees are cut down for paper production. With our banana paper, we can begin to lower that number. Now you can be completely eco-friendly without going bananas over quality.
The banana paper is made in the UK, and to my daughter's disappointment, it does not smell like bananas. It is compatible with laser printers, ink jet printers, and copy machines. To think, all I do is compost my banana peels.

Eco Food Friday: Wrap-N-Mat Replaces Plastic Sandwich Bags

wrap-n-mat.jpg I hate plastic sandwich bags. I wash and reuse them until they are full of holes, and my kitchen is always littered with drying bags. I hate recycling them too. The Wrap-N-Mat is an eco-friendly solution for packing sandwiches to work or school. Available from Greenline Paper, a company dedicated to selling environmentally sound school and office products, the Wrap-N-Mat is easy to use, washable, and reusable. I like how it unfolds into a mat, providing a surface to eat your sandwich on avoiding germs from table tops. The Wrap-N-Mat would make a nice gift for an office mate or friend at school.

Husqvarna's Solar-Powered Robot will Mow Your Lawn Without You!

husq.jpgIt is almost officially winter time, so most people living in the Northern Hemisphere are not mowing their lawns frequently if at all.  Even so, this new Husqvarna's Solar-Powered Robot is so cool I had to share it! Capable of mowing 3/4 acre, the 18 volt, 4 amp Auto Mower 230 runs 90 minutes on a single charge and cuts 1300 square feet per hour. The Auto Mower even returns to its own charging station when its power is running low!  That's one smart, eco-friendly lawn mower!

Baby Earth Helps Parents Go Green With Baby

sassy cuddle doll.jpg Baby Earth is more than just an eco-friendly online shopping site for young children. It is a resource for parents wishing to go green with baby! From blogs to ideas, such as throwing a green grandmother shower, this site has an impressive amount of information and products.

One of my favorite products is the Sassy Cuddle Doll.

Inspire baby's senses with the soft, aromatic cuddle doll. Doll is lightly scented with calming lavender to stimulate baby's sense of smell. Wooden rings softly clack together, while bright colors and textured fabrics including velour, corduroy, fleece and sateen offer visual and tactile stimulation.

When playtime is over, put the cuddle doll in baby's hands and encourage them to smell the soft lavender scent. Lavender is commonly used as an aid to sleep and relaxation.

Sassy Earth Brights are handcrafted from quality hardwoods, select fabrics and water-based finishes with packaging made from 100% recycled paperboard.

My niece has this doll and loves it! It is safe for the youngest child, even newborns. The only negative aspects of this product is it is made in China and contains polyester.

Baby Earth also hosts a baby gear recycling program called Baby RENEW. Just send your old car seat, stroller or high chair to Baby Earth, and they will disassemble it and send it to recycling centers. If the gear is still in good shape, it will be donated to a needy family.

Less is more when living life naturally: less chemicals, less toxins, less stuff. Live life simply this holiday season and give gifts with small carbon footprints from sustainable companies. During these hard economic times, we have focused on value in our 2008 Eco-Friendly Holiday Gift Guide, but we also recognize that value goes beyond monetary amounts to larger issues of conservation and sustainability.

  • Certified organic, fair trade, low impact dyes: what could be better? Go Natural Baby offers such eco-goodness in its Zah Collection of children's clothing.  Go Natural Baby™ will only put our name on products that are made with Fair Trade values, including providing a healthy work environment for its workers, paying a fair wage, and ensuring that children are not in the work environment.
  • Laptop Lunches are the big craze at my daughter's school.Although I try to avoid plastic, in31fWAAUZCwL._SL500_AA250_.jpg children's lunches, plastic is a safer alternative than glass, and Laptop Lunches are BPA-free.  The Laptop Lunch System is inspired by the Japanese Bento. The little compartments ensure you will pack your child a balanced meal with many choices, as well as appropriately-sized servings. The Laptop Lunch can be washed on the top shelf of the dishwasher.
  • Envirosax  kids series reusable shopping bags appeal to little ones with their designs, and children's excitement to have their own bag helps parents remember to use their own reusable bags in every store, not just the grocery store. Envirosax are very compact, which makes them easy to toss into a purse or backpack. They are also great for wrapping other presents in!

Beauty Products

  • Jurlique has created a line of biodynamic, organic beauty products. Grown on their own certified biodynamic and organic farms in South Australia, each product combines herbs, flowers, and naturally derived ingredients. • What is Green Science? Green Science is a line of Aveda facial products clinically proven to lift, making lines and wrinkles less visible in four weeks. I've been using several of these products, and I really like the Green Science Lifting Serum. This serum promotes surface skin cell regeneration, moisturizes, and firms skin.  It is made from bio-fermented glucosamine, organic argan oil, anti-oxidants and peptides.
  • Gilden Tree's two-sided Terra Cotta Footscrubber and Callus Remover is the perfect tool for giving yourself an eco pedicure. • Did you know that gas-powered lawn equipment is a major source of greenhouse gases? cordless lawnmower.jpgOperating your gas mower for one hour will produce the same pollution as driving a car 1300 miles! Depending on your source of electric power, the Black & Decker Cordless Mulching Lawn Mower may be an ideal item for lessening a loved one's carbon footprint. This is the only cordless mower to receive an Energy Star rating.

  • USBCELL AA Rechargeable Batteries
are like other rechargeable batteries in the sense that you can use
them hundreds of times; however, these batteries can be recharged using
the USB port of your computer. There is no need for a separate charger,
and they are easy to use. Just pop off the cap and plug them in to your
computer. Over 15 billion batteries are discarded each year. Don't toss
    'em, recharge 'em!

Don't forget the pets this holiday season and give them eco-friendly treats! You also peruse our monthly round-ups for more great natural gifts and ideas to celebrate this winter holiday season.

Human Powered Ferris Wheel in Southern India

When I first heard about a human powered Ferris wheel, I assumed it was powered by people pedaling some gizmo to make the wheel turn. Instead, a fair operator in southern India has devised this ride, in which five people propel the wheel by taking turns spinning the wheel with their full body weight. Now that's one way to have zero emission fun, but it looks a little dangerous too. I don't think I would let my kids ride on it.

Made in the USA: Lotus Blossom Style Bamboo Women's Tees

CharuLotusDOUBLE.jpg Made in Los Angeles, California, Lotus Blossom Style's organic cotton and bamboo women's tees are beautiful! The shirt fits snuggly through the middle arms/elbows, then flares slightly at the cuffs. The image is silk-screened with non-toxic water-based inks.
