5 Easy Steps to Healthy Cooking: 500 Recipes for Lifelong Wellness

5_easy_steps.jpg
Looking to improve your health and eating habits? 5 Easy Steps to Healthy Cooking: 500 Recipes for Lifelong Wellness by Camilla V. Saulsbury makes it easy with delicious recipes that are simple to follow.

This book offers simple, delicious recipes that utilize foods that have a proven track record of enhancing health or offering protection from diseases.

It can be a challenge to discern which foods really do form a healthy diet, let alone how to prepare them into delicious dishes without too much time, fuss, and expense.

5 Easy Steps to Healthy Cooking offers the solution. Vastly different from a diet book, this simplified, five-step approach to healthy eating is holistic and flexible. This is healthy cooking from a very different perspective: because it is first and foremost a cookbook, not a diet book, it begins and ends with enticing, easy-to-prepare recipes that make the five principles simple and doable.

The five principles are:

  • Choose Fresh, Whole Foods
  • Eat Mostly Vegetable and Fruit-Based Foods
  • Opt for Healthy Fats and Proteins
  • Select Superfoods (Nutrient-Dense Foods)
  • Eat More Whole Grains
I agree wholeheartedly with these five principles and try to follow them in my own eating habits, although I do have an organic sweet tooth.  I would add to the following principles to eat organically-grown food, as they are higher in nutrients and lack pesticide residue.

This is not a vegetarian cookbook, but it does contain a "Meatless Main Dish" section and a brief discussion of the Meatless Monday movement. It's also quite easy to adapt the meat recipes to be vegetarian.

Some of the recipes I plan to try in the near future are:

  • Spicy Punjabi Chickpeas with Mint Radish Raita

  • Whole Wheat Irish Soda Bread

  • Applesauce Flax Bread

  • Mushroom and Bulgur Stuffed Peppers

Got Cucumbers? Organic Rye Vodka from Square One

square_one.jpg
I still remember the first time I tried cucumber juice. I was pleasantly surprised at how refreshing it was. Now I can have that same flavor in my organic spirits!

Square One Cucumber Vodka is made from 100% organic rye!

Square One Cucumber is a deliciously aromatic spirit with the delicate and fresh taste of cucumber.

We crafted Square One Cucumber by combining the essence of organic cucumber with our original certified organic American rye vodka. To keep cucumber's fresh aroma, we applied the same skills used to capture the aromatics of flowers and plants in natural fragrances.

This spirit gives a contemporary spin to familiar cocktails like the Tom Collins or Gimlet and is a natural choice for refreshing new cocktails. For a cool, light yet effortless indulgence, try Square One Cucumber with tonic and a twist of lime.

I checked out some of the cocktail recipes and am excited to try the "Cool Collins" tonight!

Kids Love 'Em: Superfood Blueberry Hemp Power Snacks by Navitas Naturals

nativas_blueberry_hemp.jpg
Kids love to snack. Adults do too! Making snacks healthy is easy, especially with Navitas Naturals. Gluten and dairy-free, containing no refined sugar, and packed with superfoods, no guilt involved in this snacking!

We have tried Navitas Naturals Cacoa Goji Superfood Power Snack. Now we got to try Navitas Naturals - Hemp Superfood Power Snack Blueberry:

Navitas Naturals is adding Blueberry Hemp to their award-winning line of organic Navitas Power Snacks. Blueberry Hemp Navitas Power Snacks provide a diversity of the most nutrient-dense organic superfoods and organic seeds, fruits and nuts. These bite-sized cubes have a healthy whole food appearance, delicious flavor and rich chewy texture. Navitas Power Snacks do not contain refined sugar, preservatives and artificial colors and flavors. In addition to being certified organic they are also certified gluten-free, and are GMO-free and dairy-free...

Why Hemp? Nutrition experts recommend hemp seed because it's an easily digested complete protein source. It is also one of the richest vegetable sources of the Omega 3 & 6 essential fats, and in an ideal ratio to support human health. Hemp seed is also a plentiful source of fiber, vitamins and minerals such as magnesium, iron, zinc, and potassium.

Blueberries are famous for their delicious fruit flavor and abundance of phytonutrients, which many scientists believe provide powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may protect against heart disease, colon cancer and other ailments. In addition to the organic hemp powder and dried blueberries, Blueberry Hemp Power Snacks are made with other leading organic functional food stars such as chia, maca, lucuma, camu camu and maqui, as well as other wholesome raw foods such as date paste, sesame seeds, cashews and sunflower seeds.

I recently brought these snacks into a 5th/6th grade science class I teach. We were looking for elements on labels, and of course we had to snack. The children loved these, and they weren't all from families that eat health food. I felt good about giving the kids some nourishment from wholesome, "sustainably-cultivated ingredients."

The Autism Puzzle: Environmental Toxins and Rising Autism Rates

autism_puzzle.gif
One of the greatest health concerns of modern times is the rising rates of autism. This spectrum disorder varies in severity greatly and is as individual as each person is unique.

Scientists and doctors have been somewhat puzzled as to why autism is much more prevalent in modernity. Theories, such as vaccinations, have been refuted and proven countless times.

I am not a doctor, but the explanation that makes the most sense to me is the interplay between environmental toxins, including those possibly in vaccines, and our genetic make up. I believe epigenetics is at the root of rising autism rates.

The Autism Puzzle: Connecting the Dots Between Environmental Toxins and Rising Autism Rates by Brita Belli explores the how common toxins we are exposed to ever day combine with 'genetic susceptibilities" to cause the 57% increase in autism since 2002.

Journalist Brita Belli brings us into the lives of three families with autistic children, each with different ideas about autism, as she explores the possible causes. She interprets for readers compelling evidence that environmental toxins--including common exposures from chemicals mounting in our everyday lives--may be sparking this disorder in vulnerable children. Belli calls for an end to the use of hazardous materials--like toxic flame retardants used in electronics and furniture, which have been banned elsewhere--insisting that we cannot afford to experiment with our children. The Autism Puzzle puts a human face on the families caught in between the debates, and offers a refreshingly balanced perspective.

This book is easy to read, and it should be of interest to everyone, not just those affected by autism and their friends and families. We should all be concerned about how common toxins, such as BPA and flame retardants, are altering our genes.

All Natura, Sulfate Free Monkey Balm with Organic Sea Buckthorn Oils

monkey_balm.jpg
It must be sea buckthorn oil week at Really Natural! On Monday, we reviewed Sibu beauty products made with sea buckthorn. Today, we review a product designed for children with this amazing oil.

Balmers Monkey Balm is designed for "baby soft skin for your monkeys".

Monkey Balm is a 100% homemade, all-natural remedy for eczema and extremely dry skin and is formulated specifically for children and infants. This formula includes all-natural ingredients and features the amazing healing power of the sea buckthorn berry. Sea Buckthorn (seed and fruit) oil is time-tested and clinically proven to soothe irritation and heal dry, cracked, even abrasive skin resulting from eczema, rosacea, dry climates, seasonal changes, sunburn, rashes, and even minor burns and wounds. Sea buckthorn has been used for centuries in Asia and Europe to heal skin problems and is considered a Holy Fruit by ancient and modern Tibetans. Its been recommended by doctors (even Dr Oz) as the best natural cure for acne. Monkey Balm incorporates these oils from the sea buckthorn berry with other soothing botanicals like cocoa butter, and Vitamin E to create a truly remarkable product in an easy-to-use use 2.0 oz lotion-bar, kind of like a super-sized lip balm for your whole body.

I do like the bar applicator, as my son has sensory issues and does not like lotions. He does not mind stick applicators for sunscreen, and this is very similar. I also trust this product as 100% natural. It's great for grown-ups too!

Eating Light: 400 Calories or Less

eating_light.jpg
Eating Light: 400 Calories or Less is a bookazine filled with 118 recipes by the editors of Good Housekeeping, Redbook, and Country Living.

Eating Light 400 Calories or Less provides 52 tips - one for every week of the year - that will help you make healthy choices in the months to come. With advice on ordering skinny meals at restaurants, choosing beverages wisely, and blasting belly fat (try green tea, healthy fats, and purple foods!), Eating Light has you covered. Plus, a slim-down plan indicates how many calories you should consume at each meal, so you'll drop extra pounds safely and confidently.

Winter recipes like Low-Fat Lasagna (pg. 33) and Chicken Pot Pie (pg. 42) satisfy cravings for comfort food, while spring ideas like Basil Orange Chicken (48) and Grilled Swordfish Kabobs with Parsley-Olive Salsa (pg. 57) make use of seasonal herbs. Summer is grilling season, so you'll want to whip up Bacon-Wrapped Scallops (pg. 69) and Grilled Flank Steak with Corn Relish (pg. 80). Finally, transition to autumn with Fusilli with Veal, Squash & Sage (pg. 106) and Cranberry Turkey Cutlets (pg. 99).

As you can tell from the above description, this bookazine is not so good for vegetarians, and the presence of veal is just inhumane. Recipes can be adapted to be meat-free.

I can't wait to try the Tomato Tarte Tatin once we have fresh plum tomatoes again in the garden. The Cheesy Stuffed Eggplant also looks really good. We are always looking for ways to use up eggplant at harvest time.

Fight Allergies Naturally: Herbally Enhanced Nasal Cleansing Spray

dr_neuzil.jpg
I am personally not a fan of nasal sprays, but for some people, they can offer relief from  dryness and swelling due to allergies and/or the environment.

Dr. Neuzil's Irrigator Herbal Nasal Spray Herbal uses the power of essential oils to offer relief from dryness.

Dr. Neuzil's Irrigator is an herbal enhanced, saline based formula that cleanses the nasal passages of dust, pollen, pet dander and other irritants that cause discomfort. Its essential oils, which include eucalyptol, pine, menthol, wintergreen and cinnamon, moisturize sinuses while leaving the user feeling refreshed...

Developed by a Central Florida allergy and sinus medical practitioner, Dr. Neuzil's Irrigator nasal cleansing spray provides fast and easy-to-use relief for sinus irritation caused by various factors. An alternative to common nasal therapies such as a neti pot or simple saline rinse, the herbal enhanced spray is pleasant to use and not as messy as other sinus solutions.

I could have really used this product during a recent trip skiing in Colorado. The cold, dry air, high altitude, and a cold made my sinuses and nasal passages unbearable at times.

I do use aromatherapy to help with nasal issues, either with a few drops of Organic Eucalyptus Essential Oil and Organic Lavender Oil in a bowl of steaming water or an Aromatherapy Room Diffuser.

100% Organic, Truly Natural, Sport Salve Prevents Chaffing and Blisters

Screen shot 2012-03-10 at 7.29.37 AM.png
It is such a breath of fresh air to read an ingredient list you understand! 100% organic and natural, and a zero hazard score from the Environmental Working Group...WOOT!

Naturity FrictionFree Sports Balm is truly natural!

"We do not know of any other performance balm on the market for athletes that is comprised of 100% certified organic ingredients, 100% natural, and rated zero toxicity," said Anysia Kiel, Naturity's managing member. FrictionFree™creates a chemical-free defensive skin barrier that helps eliminate chafe and blisters. It's also non-staining, waterproof, wetsuit, and chamois-safe. "This athlete-tested balm is a necessity for runners, triathletes, and cyclists. We're sure it will meet the needs of competitive athletes," said Kiel.

The Naturity website was not functional when I wrote this review, so I hope the company is still in business. I sure hope they are, as really natural companies are rare in this day of "natural" and "organic" marketing.

How to Find if a Product's Natural Claims are True: No "Harsh" Chemicals?

Screen shot 2012-03-10 at 6.24.30 AM.png
I have become a little more vigilant after reading last week's report on products, including green ones, with hidden toxic chemicals in their ingredients. I try to read labels diligently when writing product reviews, but frankly, it is hard to stay on top of all claims of natural and chemical-free.

Le Baby Detangler makes such claims that I find suspicious.

  • Le Baby Detangler gently detangles hair spray on wet or dry
  • Hypoallergenic
  • No harsh chemicals
  • No parabens
  • No sulfates
  • Not tested on animals
  • Fragrance-free
  • Natural scented botanicals
  • Does not irritate skin with it's easy on the hair ingredients
Thankfully, they do disclose ingredients:
Ingredients: water (aqua), citrus aurantium dulcis (orange) flower essential water, polyquaternium-7, glycerin, polysorbate 20, aloe, barbadensis leaf, polyquaternium-10, 1,2-hexanediol, sodium benzoate, tocopheryl acetate, citrus medica limonum (lemon) peel oil, peg-8 dimethicone, disodium edta, potassium sorbate, caprylyl glycol
Whenever I can't read an ingredient that includes numbers and dashes, etc., I suspect chemical compounds.

Skin Deep, the Environmental Working Groups cosmetic database, is my go to resource for looking up products. If the products, such as the LeBaby one, has not been reviewed, I look at some of the ingredients.

For example, I don't know what peg-8 dimethicone is, and it doesn't sound good. EWG gave it a hazard score between three and six.

About PEG-8 DIMETHICONE: PEG-8 Dimethicone is a polyethylene glycol derivative of Dimethicone (q.v.) containing anaverage of 8 moles of ethylene oxide.
USE RESTRICTIONS
type of concern
Violation of industry recommendations - Restricted in cosmetics; use, concentration, or manufacturing restrictions - Not safe for use on injured or damaged skin

Those hazard scores are not terrible, but it is still a chemical.

Nowhere on the LeBaby label does it warn not to use on "injured or damaged skin". In fact, it says, "for babies, kids and everyone with sensitive skin".

We have previously reviewed LeBaby's Chemical-Free, Fragrance-Free Hair Gel for Babies and Kids raising similar ingredient concerns and claims of chemical-free.

Made in China or Made in the USA? Point6 Kid's Merino Wool Hiking Socks

point6.jpg
Long ago, I realized my kids deserved quality socks during the winter months and for outdoor activities. Cheap socks don't last and lose their shape.  Good socks last and can be paced down to younger siblings.

Point6 makes nice socks for kids and adults

THE HIKING TECH MEDIUM CREW SOCK offers extra cushioning on the instep and around the leg to protect against pressure points from heavier footwear. The cozy wool cushioning next to the skin insulates the foot from hot spots and blisters. Kids who enjoy day-long hikes, climbing tall trees, and playing til the sun goes down would be wise to choose this sock.
66% merino wool, 31% nylon, 3% spandex.

There's no question these sock are of high quality, but what confuses me is where are they made?

Point6 is out of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and their website says the socks are made in the USA. The sticker on the actual socks say made in China.  Which is it?

Iglu: A Young Adult Fiction Book on Climate Change

iglu.jpg
What happens when the rising sea envelopes Native Alaskan land and millions have relocated to the Last Frontier due to global warming? This is the setting of a fictional book written by Jacob Sackin for young adults.

Iglu is the story of native Inupiaq people who are mislabeled as terrorists for fighting for cultural survival.

But when the Iñupiaq people rise up to fight for the survival of their culture, the private army Skyhawk is brought in to subdue the growing insurgency and the Iñupiaq rebels are labeled as terrorists. Separated from her family in the aftermath of the ensuing battle, fourteen-year-old April Ipalook desperately searches for a place of refuge amidst the war zone of northern Alaska.

IGLU has a strong young female protagonist and will appeal to readers who enjoy science fiction and action stories.

I have not read the book cover to cover, and I will update this post after I have read the book in entirety.

More Glass Water Bottles

glass_bottles.jpgAquasana Glass Water Bottles come from the trusted makers of home water filter system.

The very best way to keep water pure and fresh is to bottle your own in glass containers!

Better taste, better quality; a great way to entice yourself to drink more water!

The importance of drinking more water.

Why you should always store water in glass.

I agree that glass is the best for drinking water.  It leaves behind no taste or odor, while ensuring no leaching of harmful plastic chemicals.

These are the most inexpensive glass water bottles I have seen: six bottles for $19.99. They do not have a silicone protective sleeve, like Lifefactory or Takeya glass water bottles, and the larger size does make the bottle really tall and more likely to top over.  They do make an Aquasana AquaKoozy to protect your glass bottle, but we were not sent one.

Aquasana Shower Water Filter: It's like Showering in Natural Springwater!

aquasana.jpg
Many people filter their drinking water, but they forget about the shower. Our skin absorbs toxic chemicals into our bodies just as readily as if we ingested them orally, so filtering shower water is a really good idea.

Aquasana AQ-4100 Deluxe Shower Water Filter System with Adjustable Showerhead is easy to install and removes chlorine, VOCs, and SOCs. "It's like showering in natural springwater!", which is what I do anyways.

Aquasana ® AQ-4100 Deluxe Shower Water Filter System with Adjustable Showerhead Aquasana AQ-4100 Shower Filter was voted "Product of the Year" by Cosmetology Today Magazine! This unique 2-Stage shower water filter is US Patented, has a high filtering capacity and is easy to install. No tools necessary, although pliers may be helpful. The granular copper/zinc and coconut shell carbon replaceable water filter effectively removes 99% of Chlorine, reduces VOC`s, heavy metals and other chemicals, as well as enhancing pH. Stage 1 removes chlorine and enhances pH balance with a natural copper/ zinc mineral media called KDF-55D. The second water filtration stage uses a carbonized coconut shell media for the removal of synthetic chemicals and VOCs that vaporize and can be inhaled or absorbed through the skin potentially causing adverse health and cosmetic effects. Without the harsh influences of chlorine you'll notice significant cosmetic benefits. Also by removing chlorine and other chemicals found in tap water, you eliminate health risks related to inhalation and skin absorption of these chemicals... now known to be a significant source of exposure to harmful VOCs (volatile organic chemicals). Your shower water will feel better, and be better for you. The Aquasana Shower Water Filter provides minimal pressure loss and no change in showerhead height. It`s like showering in natural spring water! The easily replaceable water filter lasts 10,000 gallons, about 6 months, and installs simply.

Healthy Home: Formaldehyde-free, Soy-Based Adhesive Hardwood Plywood Flooring by PureBond

purebond_4a.jpg
Home improvement can be very toxic! New carpeting and plywood contain a host of chemicals that can make you feel sick and create very poor indoor air quality in your home.

Columbia Forest Products has a line of plywood flooring and prints that is formaldehyde free called Pure Bond:

  • Non-Toxic Technology.

  • Soy-Based Adhesive.

  • Cost-Competitive.

  • North American Made.

  • And only from Columbia Forest Products.
The original cost-competitive decorative hardwood plywood without the formaldehyde. PureBond® is Columbia Forest Products' exclusive formaldehyde-free innovation for hardwood plywood manufacturing.

Replacing traditional urea formaldehyde (UF) hardwood plywood construction with non-toxic, soy-based PureBond enables Columbia to eliminate any added formaldehyde from standard veneer-core and non-UF composite hardwood plywood core panels. That's great news for our employees, our customers and the air we all breathe.

There are so many choices when it comes to Pure Bond. Any shade or kind of hardwood is available to make beautiful cabinets and furniture. Upon request, it can be made with Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC) Certified materials. This is a great option, but it should be standard, in my opinion, for all Pure Bond products.

Columbia Forest Products also makes really cute PlyPrints from their PureBond using the graphics of Alexander Girard (1907 - 1993).
