Blirt Shirt - Organic Cotton Baby T-Shirts with a Message
Kathleen Tracy just sent in an email about her fledgling t-shirt company, Blirt . Her concept is to introduce infants and toddlers to wordplay, taking English-language figures of speech - e.g. "bull in a china shop" or "good egg" - and illustrating them with fun, lighthearted designs. Talk about a fashion statement.
But Blirt's statements don't end there. They're also concerned with the environment and fair trade manufacturing processes. The company's website includes an environmental and fair trade mission statement that lays out the costs of unsustainable, un-fair manufacturing processes, and then explains how Blirt makes sure its processes are eco-friendly, fair and just.
Did you know the simple act of producing the cotton fiber needed to make a t-shirt (or any other conventional cotton product) is one of agriculture’s most environmentally destructive activities?
Although conventional cotton farming takes up only 3% of the world’s farmland, it uses 25% of the world’s chemical pesticides! Ironically, it is estimated that less than 10% of the chemicals applied to cotton are actually absorbed while the remaining 90% are released into the atmosphere. Moreover, as insects gradually become more resistant to pesticides, ever-increasing amounts are applied, at a massive cost to the environment.
Blirt Shirt's solution to this environmental problem? 100% organic cotton kid and toddler t-shirts, processed with non-chlorine bleach and low-impact, azo-free reactive dyes are used on our garments. Their manufacturing process is SKAL-certified, and uses fair trade labor practices audited by Oxfam-Benelux and Amnesty International.
You know your baby's the smartest kid on the block. Blirt Shirts let the rest of the world in on your secret. Smart on the surface, and smart at the core.

Great stuff. With a newborn in the house, we're getting inundated with well-meaning gifts that I know came from sweatshops. Now I've got a hip alternative to gently suggest to folks asking what they can give us.
