Blirt Shirt - Organic Cotton Baby T-Shirts with a Message

Kathleen Tracy just sent in an email about her fledgling t-shirt company, Blirt . Her concept is to introduce infants and toddlers to wordplay, taking English-language figures of speech - e.g. "bull in a china shop" or "good egg" - and illustrating them with fun, lighthearted designs. Talk about a fashion statement.

But Blirt's statements don't end there. They're also concerned with the environment and fair trade manufacturing processes. The company's website includes an environmental and fair trade mission statement that lays out the costs of unsustainable, un-fair manufacturing processes, and then explains how Blirt makes sure its processes are eco-friendly, fair and just.

Weekend Reading: Itty Bitty Hats: Knitting Patterns for Baby Hats

51JVQ6ET3ML._AA240_.jpgHas the baby bootie knitting bug bitten any other pregnant women out there? I've been itching to start knitting something adorable for my baby-to-be.

Luckily, I've got a co-worker who works at a Yarn Store, and she just brought me Itty Bitty Hats by Susan B. Anderson. It's full of easy-to-knit patterns for all kinds of cute-abulous baby hats. The photos are terrific and the instructions are easy to follow.

I picked up some Manos Del Uruguay cotton Stria yarn and am on my way to a striped stocking cap in itsy-bitsy size. Can't wait to meet the little person whose head it's going to fit on.

Buy Itty Bitty Hats.

Birth Ball for Labor During Childbirth

birthballbig2.jpgAnother natural childbirth essential? The Birth Ball aka an exercise ball or yoga ball. According to several of our friends who've recently gone through childbirth, these little babies are essential.

We've heard folks recommend using them before, during and after labor. Personally, I like sitting on mine at work -- both for the ab and balance workout and for the soft cushion (vs. a hard chair seat).

BodyTrends sells a birth ball for $15.95 that includes a pump and an exercise video. (Good for getting in shape after the birth?)

Kee-Ka Organic Cotton Baby Blanket: Sweet!

OBlanket-pea.jpg
Okay, what baby wouldn't want to swaddle up in this adorable Sweet Pea baby blankie from Kee-Ka? And what Really Natural mom wouldn't feel good knowing that her baby was cuddled up in 100% certified super-soft organic cotton, dyed using certified low-impact dyes.

The Sweet Pea Baby Blanket was included in the care package that Kristi from Kee-Ka sent over last week. Russ and I ooh'ed and ah'ed over the cute packaging (recycled, of course!), and I couldn't stop cooing over the softness of the blankie itself.

Our own little baby isn't due until July, but friends with kids have told us that a well-swaddled baby is a happy baby. And baby swaddled in the Kee-Ka baby blankie? I have to imagine s/he'd be happy indeed.

The packaging itself is worth writing about. Who wouldn't want to receive one of these cute boxes? Stay tuned this week to find out some of what was inside.

Kee-Ka Organic Baby and Toddler Clothes

OBB-monkey-ptitsinge.jpgRecently got an email from Kristi over at Kee-Ka announcing some new products they're introducing this spring. The Brooklyn-based is known for its organic baby and toddler clothing (including the adorable bib and burp cloth pictured at right).

According to Kristi, they're introducing a bunch of new styles, including towels, blankets, capes and baby bedding. They're also bringing out a line of accessories for "four-legged children." (My mom, whose dog has more toys than my sister and I did, will know exactly what she means.)

The new gear hasn't hit the Kee-Ka website yet, but we hear it's coming soon, and Kristi promises to send pictures and maybe even a sample or two. We'll let you know when we learn more.
