Recycle Your Toothbrush

white_toothbrush.jpg We've featured the Preserve Jr. Recycled Toothbrush on Really Natural before, specifically the parent company Recycline's efforts to support the National Wildlife Federation. Recently, while reading Z Recommends, I discovered that not only are Preserve toothbrushes made from recycled Stoneyfield yogurt containers, but you can return your old toothbrush to the company for further recycling.
The American Dental Association estimates that the average American replaces their toothbrush two times a year (RN note:  even though dentists recommend every three months). At these replacement rates, used toothbrushes account for approximately 50 million pounds of waste annually.
When you are ready to replace your Preserve toothbrush, simply print a postage-paid return label from the Recycline website, mail you old toothbrush in, and it will be ground up to make plastic lumber.

Dr. Hauschka Cleansing Milk

Dr. Hauschka Cleansing Milk is an amazing beauty product! This gentle cleanser is made from plant oils that leave the skin feeling soft and healthy. Soothing jojoba ,almond, and rice germ oils combine with anthyllis extract to nourish your skin. Fermented grain extracts and vitamin B strengthen and fortify your skin, while gently removing impurities and dirt from your face. Dr. Hauschka Cleansing Milk is perfect for all skin types! All ingredients are GMO-free and biodynamically grown. Dr. Hauschka products are truly natural:
The BDIH is a federal association of German manufacturers of drugs, supplements, cosmetics and personal care products whose "Guidelines for Natural" are the most selective in the world. Dr.Hauschka's line of holistic skin care is 100% Certified Natural by the BDIH, and we're proud to display their "Certified Natural Cosmetic" seal on our product packaging.

A friend of mine calls Dr. Hauschka products "crack for eco-chicks", as once you try them, you are hooked for life. Even Tony Soprano gave his mistress Dr. Hauschka products as an apology. In contrast to Tony Soprano's ethics, Dr. Hauschka is an inspiring natural beauty company:

Dr.Hauschka Skin Care is a different kind of company. Inspired by our vision of a culture of care, we've created a company not driven by greed but powered by compassion. All we do is in the interest of fostering well-being in the world, from our ecologically sound methods of growing and sourcing ingredients to our one-of-a-kind manufacturing processes and international fair trade initiatives.

You can look forward to more reviews of Dr. Hauschka products on Really Natural in the future!!!

Organic Cotton Swabs

You can find just about anything grown organically now, and cotton swabs are no exception. Organic Essentials Organic Cotton Swabs are totally biodegradable and compostable, and the packaging is made from recycled cardboard. Personally, I have difficulty finding these organic swabs in our local coop or health food store, as they are inconsistently stocked there. Ordering Organic Essentials Organic Cotton Swabs online is the only way I can be sure to always have them on stock. Of course, remember cotton swabs should not be placed in the ear canal!

Buying products made from organic cotton is not only important because of the amount of pesticides used in cotton production, but often cotton seeds are genetically modified. 50% of all of the cotton grown in the United States is genetically modified! Genetically modified cotton is resistant to the bollworm and increases production by 80%, but at what health or environmental cost? The truth is, we just don't know the potential long-term effects of GMO crops. According to Action Bioscience,

There is little scientific study about their health risks
Safety test technology is inadequate to assess potential harm
They can carry unpredictable toxins
They may increase the risk of allergenic reactions

It is better to be safe than sorry, so purchasing organically grown good whenever possible is the best choice. Smaller items, such as Organic Essentials Organic Cotton Swabs are often more affordable, and thus easier to incorporate into anyone's budget. Organic cotton is king!

Lily Organics Rejuvenating Enzyme Mask

rejuvenating_enzyme_mask-tn.jpgIt must be fall. My skin has been dry. Not flaky dry, but just sort of, well, malnourished. Which is why I was so glad to remember the Rejuvenating Enzyme Mask the folks from Lily Organics sent a couple of months ago.

As far as I can tell, the mask is mostly honey -- a natural humectant which draws moisture to your skin. The mask also includes fruit enzymes from papaya and pineapple to dissolve dead skin cells, as well as comfrey, lily, horsetail and mint. According to the Lily website, this combination works to

remove the build up of dead skin cells, stimulate new cell growth, balance combination skin and regenerate damaged skin.

All I know is that I'm grateful for it.

The mask went on smooth, smelled great, and was easy to wear for the recommended 30 minutes. At the end, it washed off cleanly, and left my skin soft, shiny, smooth and moist.

Lily Organics Rejuvenating Enzyme Mask
is all natural, and gentle enough to use everyday, even on sensitive skin.

Available at Lily Organics.

Pacific Shaving Oil: Big Things Come in Small Packages

2ozbottle.gifA while back, our friends over at Shaving Stuff did a feature on shaving oils. "You should check these out," Russ said. "Think of all the shaving cream cans you're keeping out of landfills."

Well, we did think about it recently, when we came across a tiny bottle of Pacific Shaving Oil. According to the packaging, a tiny 2 ounce bottle contains up to 400 shaves. You apply just a few drops of the oil to your face for each shave, and go from there. According to the folks at Shaving Stuff,

Shaving oils work by applying a thin layer of lubricant to your skin, so the razor glides over the oil and can cut the hair without damaging the skin. This is similar to the way creams and gels work, just without all the extra junk which gets caught up in the razor. Think of it as a back to the basics shave. The fundamentals. You're only applying to your face the bare essentials of what's needed. It's a good philosophy.

We like Pacific Shaving Oil because it's made from all natural essential oils like Sunflower, Tangerine Peel, Grapefruit Peel, Avocado, and Kukui Nut Oil. Plus, for each bottle you purchase, Pacific Shaving plants a tree. Best of all, because you use so little of it for each shave, you won't be purchasing too many of those little bottles.

Speaking of which, about the landfills: Pacific Shaving Company estimates that sales of its shaving oil have already helped eliminate 18,000 pounds of shaving cream cans from landfills, enough to span five miles if laid end to end. If you haven't been shaving, it's almost enough to make you want to start!

Available at Pacific Shaving.

SkinFree Skincare Products: All Natural and Petroleum-Free

dpp_0053.jpgMany thanks to the folks from SkinFree Skincare Products, who recently sent over samples of some of their moisturizers and soaps for sensitive skin. I wish I'd discovered them sooner!

SkinFree products are all natural, fragrance-free and petroleum-free. SkinFree owner Julie Hilton, a practicing pharmacist, designed the skincare line in response to customer requests for recommendations on products for difficult skin conditions, especially fragrance allergies. Her products are recommended for individuals with skin allergies, eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis. They're also ideally suited for pregnant moms, babies, diabetics, renal patients and people undergoing radiation therapy. I can understand why.

When I was pregnant, I developed a sensitivity to petroleum-based ingredients in my regular skincare products. My skin was dry and itchy, but I couldn't stand the petroleum smell in products containing mineral oil or petroleum jelly.

SkinFree has three products I'd recommend for pregnant women, or anyone else with dry, sensitive skin: their Super Moisture Body Balm, their After Shower Moisture Spritz, and their Niaouli Butter Stick. These products are so gentle, I'd even recommend them for babies!

Desert Essence Organics Red Grape Conditioner

g_2_02.gifJust got back from a week-long vacation on Martha's Vineyard. While there, I had the opportunity to sample a product that recalls a different kind of vineyard -- Desert Essence Organics Italian Red Grape Conditioner. And absolutely loved it.

The sweet-smelling conditioner is suitable for both color and non-color treated hair. It contains the antioxidants resveratrol and red wine extract, which act as antioxidant UV filters to protect the hair from environmental stresses like sun and saltwater. Other key ingredients include grape seed oil, Vitamin E and Vitamin B5.

But the best thing about it is the smell, which folks I was with described as "real grape", "an afternoon in Tuscany in the height of autumn", and "like grape Hubba Bubba, only better because it's organic and makes your hair look good."

Like all Desert Essence Organics products, Italian Red Grape Conditioner uses organic ingredients wherever possible, is 100% vegan, and is wheat and gluten free. It's paraben-, silicon- and petroleum-product-free, and is not tested on animals.

And it makes your hair smell amazing. Yum.

Buy Desert Essence Organics Italian Red Grape Conditioner online or at Whole Foods.
