Flying Daisies: Find Your Carefree

Screen shot 2012-06-23 at 8.20.13 AM.png
Sometimes it takes awhile for product reviews to be completed. Sometimes it takes so long, it appears an item is no longer available. This is one of those reviews.

We were sent two organic soaps from Flying Daisies:

  1. Calendula Pedals

  2. Southwest Gourmet

When opening the box, the lovely smell of botanical oils was quite pleasing.

Even though these soaps are no longer available, Flying Daisies has many interesting products available to help you "Find Your Carefree".

We choose our own lifestyle. One that is not bound by any set path. We are playful and unique in our own way. We feel strength in our independence and creativity. We cherish our companions. We appreciate different approaches to life. Our imagination holds no boundaries. We seek to lead a simpler life, free from complexities. Like a field of daisies moving with the wind, we are alive, in motion, growing, and embracing the journey ahead.

The Boulder, Colorado, brand Flying Daisies was born out of the love for life. This love is the soul behind our products. It's a lifestyle that is carefree and adventurous. We strive to blend a way of life with this way of thinking. Our products embody this synergy, and hopefully inspire women to embrace their own

Organic Aromatherapy Skin Care from Tropical Rainforest: Wembe Moisturizing Stick for Eyes and Lips

wembe_lip.jpg
We have positively reviewed Wembe soaps before and are very pleased to try another product from the Amazon rainforest.

WEMBE ORGANIC MOISTURIZING STICK:

Wembé's secret recipe provides an exquisite antioxidant action for deep moisturizing of delicate areas. The base of the formula is Rosehip oil, which is rich in antioxidants and vitamin A. Infused with our perfected formula, the firm, smooth moisturizing stick offers comfort to chapped lips and can also be used on any skin surface to alleviate dryness and sagging. It's perfect for your lips, eye contour and cheeks.

Wembe offers full disclosure of ingredients:
Vegetable essential oils, Cupassu butter (Theobroma grandiflorum), Rosehip oil, Beeswax

This product is everything you want in skin care: vegan, cruelty-free, gluten-free, organic, handmade, etc.

I really love the bamboo packaging! It makes the product seem of higher quality, which it is,  and something I will take care of rather than a plastic lip balm that inevitably gets tossed and lost.

Of course, this product is luxurious to your lips, and I can't wait to try it on my eyes before bed, as recommended.

New Sunscreen Rules: Aubrey Natural vs. Jason Naturals SPF 30

Screen shot 2012-06-02 at 8.11.12 AM.png
Last year, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) attempted to tackle the problem of inaccurate sunscreen labeling. Unfortunately, the FDA has kowtowed to the beauty industry and delayed the new rules for sunscreen labels until December 2012.

Consumers need to be aware and cautious when selecting suncare products, as there is some evidence that some sunscreen ingredients may actually cause cancer.

We have been sent two SPF 30 sunscreens by "natural" companies to try. Both say they offer UVA and UVB protection.

Aubrey Organics Natural Sun SPF 30 Active Lifestyles Sunscreen

Ideal for swimmers, hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, this hardworking sport formula goes on smoothly with nourishing kukui and macadamia nut oils and other plant-based skin hydrators. You'll love its exotic natural scent, inspired by the tropics.

Jason Mineral Natural Sunblock SPF 30

This fragrance free, physical sunscreen is ideal to protect sensitive skin from sun damage. A blend of Chamomile and Marigold (Calendula) Extracts helps calm and soothe skin. Safe for use on babies six months and older as well as adults with sensitive skin.

Both products are about the same price ($11-$12). Both contain Zinc oxide and Titanium Dioxide, which they need in order to claim UVA protection.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has done extensive research on sunscreens.
Both the Aubrey and Jason sunscreens have low hazard scores of 2 out of 10. Both have excellent sunscreen stability.

These products are very similar, but Aubrey is a brand I trust more than Jason. I have used the Aubrey sunscreen extensively on backpacking trips. It held up to sweat and water well. I have not tested the Jason sunblock as thoroughly.

Goody Ouchless Hair Ties: Great for Hair, Made in China

goody_ouchless1.jpg
We have been sent two Goody Ouchless products:
Goody Ouchless My Skinny Jeans Elastics:

Product Features

  • Goody ouchless elastic is America's No.1 elastic

  • Ouchless elastics are made with the new inches smart stretch core inches which is 40% stronger and doesn't loose it's shape

  • Great for pulling your hair up any time of day

  • 4mm no-metal my skinny jeans elastics, great for medium to thick hair

  • 24 Piece count

Goody "Icing on the Cake" Ouchless Gentle Headbands

Sometimes I am sent products that have nothing to do with "Really Natural". I clearly state to publicists and companies the ethos of this blog.  I feel obligated to review every product sent, thus I can hopefully exposed products that are not environmentally-friendly.

I do like these metal-free hair ties. I use them all the time.

It is quite ironic that these products are promoted as "America's No.1 elastic" since they are made in China. Goody's response:

WHY AREN'T YOUR PRODUCTS MADE IN THE USA?
Like many other companies, Goody has had to compete in the highly competitive retail marketplace by being focused on the cost to develop and manufacture our products. Which means Goody continually investigates opportunities to manufacture our products in countries, including the US, which will allow Goody to manufacture highly quality products at a great value to our customers and consumers.

No Parabens or Phthalates: Jason Calming Lavender "Pure Natural" Hand & Body Lotion

Jason_lavender.jpgAs mentioned in a previous review, I am always suspect of Jason Natural Cosmetic products, as they typically are not all natural.

We were sent JasonCalming Lavender Pure Natural Hand & Body Lotion. I do love the smell!

This botanically rich, non-greasy daily lotion naturally delivers deep, long-lasting hydration. Our natural blend of Vitamin C & E and Kukui Nut Oil wraps skin in relieving comfort while calming Lavender soothes your senses. With use, skin is touchably soft, balanced and relaxed.

Once again, a Jason's product receive a moderate score from the Environmental Working Group. This lotion received a hazard score of six out ten.  I like my products to have much lower scores.

Ironically, it is the fragrance that I like that received the highest marks for toxicity. Also, the polysorbate-60 could be contaminated with the carcinogen 1,4-Dioxane.

Jason Natural Cosmetics Kids Only!: NOT All Natural, NOT "Extra Gentle"

jason_kids_only.jpg
We've reviewed Jasons Natural Cosmetics before, and I always approach the brand with some trepidation after developing a scalp condition from Jason shampoo. I cannot say for sure the product was the cause, but I have avoided it ever since. That being said, I try to approach any review with an open mind.

We were sent three products from Jason's Kids Only! line. As always, I refer to the Environmental Working Group's (EWG) hazard scores for safety. All of these products are free of:

  • Paraben

  • Sulfate

  • Wheat and Gluten

  • Phthalate

  • Fluoride

  • Glycol

  • Mineral Oil

  • Lanolin

  • Petrolatum Free

Jason Natural Cosmetics - Kids Only Orange Toothpaste
EWG hazard score: 2 out of 10
This product is not all natural, as advertised. It contains the synthetic surfactant Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate .

Jason Kids Only Extra Gentle Duo Set Shampoo & Conditioner
EWG hazard score: 5 out of 10
The biggest concern is the fragrance used in these products, which has a hazard score of eight. It is somewhat ironic that a product marketed as "extra gentle" would have such a moderate score. Plus, these products contain the know carcinogen 1,4-Dioxane.

I used to use Jason products because they are the most affordable, but since I have done research, I feel they mislead consumers with marketing terms like "pure", "natural", and "organic".

Stages of Beauty Uses Natural Ingredients to Target Age Specific Needs

stages_of_beauty.png
I turned 40 this year, and my skin has definitely changed. It's more predictable than my skin of youth. It only makes sense that different ingredients would be beneficial for skin of different ages, which is the premise behind Stages of Beauty.

Unique Ingredients:

Monk's Pepper Berry Extract - Anti-oxidant complex shown to dramatically improve the vitality and appearance of skin while fighting signs of aging, promoting a radiant glow and increase hydration.

Red Tea Extract - Found in mountains of South Africa and has been shown to contain SOD, which acts an both an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory in the body, neutralizing free radicals that can lead to wrinkles and aged skin. Red tea is full of vitamins and minerals that increase capillary strength and promote younger, healthier looking skin.

Western Dock - The extract of the Western Dock plant contain Tyrosinase inhibitory enzymes that lighten the appearance of unwanted dark spots.

We were sent the Elegance toner designed for women in their 40s. This toner helps hydrate, balance hormones, and promotes elasticity.

This product does not contain any of the red flag ingredients I look for in beauty products, but my list is not exhaustive. It is

FORMULATED WITHOUT:

  • Sulfates

  • Parabens

  • Petrochemicals

  • Synthetic Dyes

  • Phthalates

  • GMOs

Disclosure: I was sent free samples of these products to review. No prior assurances were given as to whether the review would be positive or negative.

Desert Botanicals and Marula Oil: fiafini Sensitive Skin Care Mother's Day Collection

fiafini.jpg
My skin has changed with age. It can be dry in the morning, oily in the evening. One thing that is consistent is it is sensitive to chemicals.

Many of today's skin issues that plague people of all ages are a result or reaction to harsh chemicals found in beauty products. fiafini is designed for people with sensitive skin, but anyone can benefit from the desert botanicals and marula oil.

Fiafini's Mother's Day collection includes the following products:

Founded in 2003, Fiafini Skincare is the brainchild of Serafini and her two sisters, Ursula and Halina, based on the natural ingredient Marula oil. Used for centuries by South African women in the care and beauty of their complexions, Marula oil is a potent, powerful and pure anti-aging wonder. Extremely stable on the skin and rich in vitamin C, this remarkable oil is naturally chemical-free, and safe for all skin types, even sensitive.

In keeping with her desire to provide women with outstanding results, Serafini has clinically tested each product, as well as tested with real woman to guarantee the Fiafini delivers on its promises. Tests revealed that after using the complete Fiafini system twice a day for seven days, skin showed up to a 127 percent increase in natural moisture levels§ and 94 percent of women felt Delicate Cleansing Emulsion was gentle on their skin◊. Just under 90 percent of women strongly agreed their skin felt smooth and soft after using Divine Hydration Moisturizer for only one day◊, and after just one use of Deluxe Anti-aging Eye Cream, 85 percent of women noticed visibly more hydrated skin around their eyes◊.

Unfortunately, these products contain ingredients the Environmental Working Group says to avoid. I found retinyl palmitate and DMDM hydantoin listed on the bottles.

It's probably a good idea to choose safer beauty products for yourself and your mom!

Disclosure: I was sent free samples of these products to review. No prior assurances were given as to whether the review would be positive or negative.
