Year in Review: Top 5 Really Natural Posts of 2008

Happy New Year! The following is a recap of the top ten posts that were written and received the most traffic on Really Natural in 2008.
- Solar Hot Water Heaters Found on 90% of Israel's Rooftops: In the 1950s, Israel experienced a fuel shortage, and residents responded by installing solar hot water heaters on their rooftops. By 1983, 60% of homes had solar hot water heaters, and current law requires their installation. Jerusualem's skyline is beautifully cluttered with 90% of homes' rooftops adorned with solar hot water heaters.
- Toyota Adding Solar Panels to Prius to Power Air Conditioning: The Toyota Prius has long been the golden child of the environmental movement for its fuel economy. When the EPA changed the standards for reporting fuel economy on new car stickers to include the use of air conditioning, the hybrid Prius lost a few miles per gallon. That may all change, now that Toyota plans to install solar panels on the roof of high end models to power the AC.
- Build a Green Home - No More Power Bills Ever: A New Jersey engineer Mike Strizki has created a green home resulting in no more power bills ever, and not just electric bills. Strizki converts sunshine into electricity using photovoltaic panels - and then uses the electricity to wring hydrogen for fuel out of ordinary tap water.
- Your Flat-Screen TV is Worse for the Environment than a Coal Burning Power Plant : Nitrogen trifluoride (NF3) has been deemed the "missing greenhouse gas", because it is not covered by the Kyoto Protocol, yet it is 17,000 times stronger than carbon dioxide! NF3 used to be produced in tiny amounts, but the boom in flat-screen TVs has changed that.
- Solar Stik Portable Solar Array Cheaper than a Generator to Run: If you ever have the need for green, portable power, Solar Stik is the "new generator". For example, Solar Stiks were sent to assist in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike. What is a Solar Stik? It is portable solar system that weighs about 100 pounds and can be set up in about 10 minutes.

Really Natural is Now Carbon Offsetting Site Visitors!

It has been the practice of
Really Natural to
carbon offset the server for this site, as well as all Blopire sites. Now, we are also offsetting the carbon created by our site visitors. Using the service
CO2Stats, we are measuring total visitor electricity use and offsetting emissions. So far this month for
Really Natural, our server footprint is 4.3204 lbs CO2 (31.1088 kWh), and our client footprint is 0.4378 lbs CO2 (4.0473 kWh).
CO2Stats was started by Tim Sullivan and Alex Wissner-Gross, PhD students at Yale and Harvard respectfully. Sullivan explains:
Most internet users are unaware of its environmental impact. To solve this problem, we created CO2Stats, the first-ever tool that allows bloggers and webmasters all over the world to monitor the carbon footprints of individual web sites internationally. Our ultimate vision is to make the entire internet carbon-neutral. Our ultimate vision is to make the entire internet carbon-neutral.
We too share that vision!

Happy Earth Day!
Happy Earth Day, everyone, from all of us here at Really Natural.
Yep. We know we're a day late. We love you, but preferred to spend our Earth Day, well, outside enjoying it. We celebrated by taking a walk with friends, having dinner with family -- oh, and taking a quick trip to Home Depot to pick up our free compact fluorescent light bulb. (Russ used it to replace the bulb in our laundry closet -- perfect!)
It's pretty cool to see the attention that Earth Day is getting this year. Treehugger has been asking if recycling has jumped the shark, but our feeling is, the more folks who pay attention to reducing, reusing and yes, recycling, the better. Sure, we'd love to see a world where everyone's goal was no waste instead of less waste. But in the meantime, it feels good to know that folks are waking up to that fact that this Earth -- not to mention the condition in which we leave it to our kids and our kids' kids -- is our responsibility.
Let's hope all the attention translates to more than lip service. We wish you an excellent year!
