Natural Laundry Care: Vaska Spotoff Advanced Botanicals Spot Remover

img_spotoff.jpg
I know plenty of green living folks who have resorted to toxic products when it comes to stain removal. Thankfully, you don't have to anymore.

Vaska Spotoff is a color safe, biodegradable, non-toxic stain remover.

Spotoff is an all-natural stain remover for spills and stains on clothing, rugs, and upholstery. Spotoff uses potent botanical cleaning agents to remove wine, dirt, and other tough stains without harming textiles.

Safe on colors, whites, and all natural and synthetic washable fabrics, Spotoff contains no dyes or fragrances that can irritate sensitive skin and harm the environment.

I tried Spotoff on a shirt I paid way too much for at Anthropologie that had a cooking oil stain. It had been through the dryer already, so I knew it was a hard one to remove. I followed the directions and left Spotoff on the stain for ten minutes before washing.

Easy Hardwood Floor Cleaning with Refillable, Reusable Microfiber Bona Spray Mop

318npirtmGL._AA300_.jpg
I have four dogs and two kids. My floors get dirty immediately after cleaning. I don't want to always have to fill up a bucket and mop. I once tried the Swiffer Wet Jet, but I hated the disposable pads, batteries that always died, and the chemical cleaner. I would try to reuse the Swiffer bottles by filling them with something less toxic, but even with channel locks, the lids would not come off without ruining them.

Bona Hardwood-Floor Spray Mop with Replaceable Cleaner Cartridge is a much greener solution. It comes with a microfiber mop pad that washes easily in the washing machine. It requires no batteries, as the spray is triggered with a hand pump. The bottle lids unscrew normally, so you can refill it with any floor cleaner you want to use. You can even buy the Hardwood Floor Cleaner in one gallon size for refilling the cartridge.

An effective, environmentally responsible, and non-toxic formula for all types of residential hardwood floors. Specially designed to be safe for floors, families, and the environment.
I love the convenience of our Bona mop! I also like the flexibility I have to use any cleaner in the mop.  My only complaint is I wish I had another microfiber pad to use while the other one is washing.

Conserve Environmentally-Friendly Cleaning Products: Just Mix Tablet with Water

cleaner-bottle-all-new.jpg
If you look at the ingredients of your favorite cleaning products, you will find water near the top, whether the product is eco-friendly or not. I always think it is silly to be paying for water, and besides water adds to the shipping weight and increases any product's carbon footprint in transportation from manufacturing to retail.

Conserve by Baum Gartens makes buying concentrated cleaning products easy and affordable. By putting the product in tablet form, there is no measuring (or spilling) of the cleaning product involved when mixing it with water.

We tried out two Conserve tablet cleaners:
Conserve Glass Cleaner, Makes One Gallon, Vanilla Lavender

More economical than the competition Quickly cleans and shines windows, mirrors and glass surfaces, leaving behind a fresh scent. Environmentally friendly, yet as powerful as the leading brands. Simply drop one effervescent tablet in the reusable bottle, fill with water and start using. Kit contains 32-oz. trigger spray bottle and four tablets; makes one gallon. Contains no petrochemicals, phosphates or acids. Cleaner/Detergent Type: Glass; Application: Mirrors; Windows; Applicable Material: Glass; Mirrors; Windows; Chemical Compound: N/A.

Conserve Odor Eliminator,w/32oz Refillable Bottle/4 Tablets,Lavender
Keep your home and office smelling fresh. Apply to clothes, upholstery and drapes to neutralize odors and leave behind a fresh scent. Environmentally friendly, yet as powerful and effective as the leading brands. Simply drop one effervescent tablet in the reusable bottle, fill with water and start using. Kit contains 32-oz. trigger spray bottle and four tablets; makes one gallon. Contains no petrochemicals, phosphates or acids. Scent: Lavender; Physical Form: Tablet; Application: Odor Control; Capacity (Volume): N/A.

You need to be patient while you wait for the tablets to dissolve (about five to ten minutes). I am not sure what the ingredients are in each product, as they are not listed. Given the marketing of the term "environmentally-friendly", these products could be such simply by reducing waste of plastic spray bottles, or they could also contain green ingredients. I just don't know. At least they do not contain petrochemicals, phosphates or acids.

Good Home Co. Products Tested on Good People, not Good Animals

Screen shot 2011-03-19 at 8.09.38 AM.png
Inspired by her parents' farm in Ohio, Christine Dimmick started the Good Home Co. making products on her kitchen stove. The Good Home Co. does not test on animals, only "good humans", and the products are vegan. They do not contain harsh chemicals.

Lately "organic" products have been popular in the market place, however none of our products would be deemed organic. Why? Because in order to be organic, all ingredients must be "grown", which is why the term organic relates to food. We use food items, but we also use other ingredients, such as water and soaps, that simply cannot be "grown". We hold ourselves to high ethics and standards and will not deceive our customers with claims that are impossible and do not pertain to our products, now matter how trendy they currently are. Though one ingredient we use may be deemed organic, if all ingredients cannot make this claim, then the product cannot be ingredient.

I agree with the above statement, but when I read the labels on the Good Home Co. products I was sent to review, not only are some non-descript (fabric softener and fragrance), none are labeled as organic. I understand not labeling an entire product as organic for the above reasons, but I like my products to contain some organic ingredients.  In fact, I take some offense at being labeled as "trendy" for caring about herbicide and pesticide use in our environment.

We were sent the following products:

The Environmental Working Group has given the Good Home Co.'s fragrance a hazard score of 8. That's pretty high. Other products contain chemical colorants. The Good Home Co. does not claim to be all-natural and admits to using manmade ingredients in its fragrance.

Clean + Green Furniture Refresher Cleans and Eliminates Pet Odors Naturally

clean_green_furniture_refresher.jpg
We have some very stinky dog beds on our deck.   I sometimes sprinkle them with baking soda to eliminate odors. Clean + Green Furniture Refresher Odor Eliminator for Dogs offers another solution:

Powerful and Effective
Professional strength. Used by pet and cleaning professionals. Exclusive Patented Encapsulation Technology and Advanced Eliminator Formula.

All Natural Ingredients:
Cane sugar derivatives, proprietary botanical extracts and hydrated cellulose (cleaning agents), purified water and nitrogen propellant (non-flammable & eco friendly.)

Quick and Easy
Works on contact. Just spray - no need to soak, scrub or rinse.

Safe and Eco Friendly
Safe on all water-safe surfaces. Environmentally Responsible Formulation: non-toxic, non-flammable, non-corrosive, non-carcinogenic, biodegradable and natural propellant.

This product is even suppose to eliminate skunk odor, but I don't think it is safe to spray directly on dog fur.

I sprayed our stinky dog beds, and Clean + Green Furniture Refresher Odor Eliminator for Dogs did seem to help. I am wary of aerosol cans though, even though the National Aerosol Association assures us they do not deplete the ozone layer. Even so, they can be trickier to recycle, so I would prefer to see this product in a pump spray.

Clorox to Fully Disclose Ingredients: Preservatives, Dyes and Fragrances

clorox.jpg
In a move that surprises me, Clorox has agreed to disclose all of its product ingredients. UPI reports:

The Tuesday announcement of the disclosures marks the first time a mainstream cleaning product manufacturer has revealed all the ingredients used in all of its products -- about 200 items in the case of Clorox, the Los Angeles Times reported...

"This additional information about our products is a natural next step to take ... as we continue to drive transparency and industry leadership in the area of product ingredient communication," Clorox Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Don Knauss said in a statement.

Environmental groups are applauding the decision, and finally consumers will know what really is in Clorox cleaning products. Even with full disclosure, I'll still stick to green cleaners not made by Clorox.

Eco Clean Cleaning Products and Hand Soap Made in Denmark

Screen shot 2011-01-16 at 8.06.27 AM.png
Eco Clean products are biodegradable and free of petro-chemicals:

The Eco Clean Collection reflects this greener scheme of things and adheres to the need of perfecting homes with safe and eco-conscious cleaning products. Eco Clean is an indigenous Denmark cleaning product range made from pure, local Danish ingredients available at a shockingly reasonable price. Made from Danish sugar beets, Eco Clean is a sustainable, renewable, readily biodegradable resource that comes from farms on the island of Falster.

When looking through the ingredients list on the hand soap, I don't exactly believe the above quote, as sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) is the second ingredient after water. SLS is often considered a natural ingredient, as it is derived from coconut, but it is still a concerning ingredient. Furthermore, I don't believe that coconuts grow in Denmark. The hand soap also contains chemical colorants like CI 74160 and CI 16255.

We received the following products from Eco Clean:
  • Eco Clean Kitchen Countertop Cleaner, Orange and Rosemary
This new cleaner is specifically developed for the kitchen and contains our ACTIVE ECO BOOSTER to clean more efficiently and effectively. Non-Toxic, Biodegradable Kitchen Countertop cleaner can be used on all kinds of stove tops, sinks, tiles, cabinets, and all kinds of surfaces like ceramics, marble, glass, granite and vinyl Safe to use around Children and Pets. Does not harm your skin or the environment. Scented with essential oils to leave your kitchen smelling heavenly. Free of Petro Chemicals, Bleach, Ammonia and Phosphates. This product is not tested on animals.
  • Eco Clean Hand Wash, Lavender
Extra Gentle Hand Wash for frequent use. Leaves your hands clean, soft and delicately fragranced. Allergy Friendly fragrance. Mild to your skin. Paraben Free. Biodegradable. This product is not tested on animals.
  • Eco Clean Glass Cleaner, White Tea and Sage

Safe to use around Children and Pets. Does not harm your skin or the environment. Scented with essential oils. Free of Petro Chemicals, Bleach, Ammonia and Phosphates. This product is not tested on animals.
  • Eco Clean Toilet Cleaner, Cool Mint

Does not harm your skin or the environment. Scented with essential oils to leave your bathroom smelling clean and fresh. Free of Petro Chemicals, Bleach, Ammonia and Phosphates. This product is not tested on animals.
  • Eco Clean Bathroom Cleaner, Lavender and Mint
This new cleaner contains our ACTIVE ECO BOOSTER to clean more efficiently and effectively. Non-Toxic, Biodegradable Bathroom cleaner can be used on all kinds of marble, tiles, sinks, taps, floors, toilets and bathtubs. Safe to use around Children and Pets. Does not harm your skin or the environment. Scented with essential oils to leave your bathroom smelling amazingly fresh. Free of Petro Chemicals, Bleach, Ammonia and Phosphates. This product is not tested on animals.
I have to disagree that SLES is allergen-free, as my own son gets eczema from it. Lot of "natural" companies use it, but I am not sure why Eco Clean uses chemical colorants.

Eco Clean's name may imply they are completely green, and I am thankful they disclose their ingredients; however, just examining the hand soap alone causes concern. The cleaners may be more natural, but I can't help but feel cautious with this line.

Natural Enzyme Cleaning: BioWish Healthy Clean Multi-Purpose Spray

biowish.jpg
Cleaning supplies can be some of the most toxic products in our homes. In fact, some states are so concerned they have finally required companies to fully list product ingredients so consumers can make wise choices. Ariel Schwartz writes for Fast Company:

The New York law, which will be enforced beginning this week, will be a boon to companies that offer non-toxic cleaning chemicals. Chicago-based BiOWiSH Technologies, offers a powerful, biodegradable system for breaking down organic waste. The technology can be used in everything from multi-purpose cleaning spray to removing unnecessary chemicals from industrial wastewater treatment plants.

"Unlike normal chemical based cleaning products that rely on phosphates--these are used in detergents to stop materials from sticking so that they can be washed away--our tech can do the same task, but without any chemicals," explains Rod Vautier the CEO of BiOWiSH. Phosphates from cleaning products can enter waterways, leading to eutrophication of lakes and generating fish-killing algae blooms.

We have recently tried out BIOWISH's multi-purpose spray called Healthy Clean.
Benefits:

  • Eliminates odors, does not mask them

  • Breaks down fats, oils, grease and dirt

  • No petrochemicals

  • No added phosphates, ammonia or chlorine

  • Safe for plants, animals and septic systems

  • Reduced impact on the environment (less packaging, transport and storage)

  • 100% natural and non-toxic

I like how with this product comes with tablets you mix with water, thus you are not paying for water nor is the liquid adding to the shipping weight of this product. It is also very important to me that BIOWISH is all-natural and makes the products Material Safety Data Sheet readily available to consumers.  From stainless steel to carpet, Healthy Clean is safe and effective  on a variety of surfaces.
