Eat Asparagus New Year's Eve to Prevent a Hangover

In a few days, we will be celebrating the end of 2012. New Year's Eve is night when typically too much alcohol is drunk leaving many suffering from hangovers. Although it is not in season in northern climates, asparagus may offer some relief.

The Telegraph reports:

Scientists have found chemicals in the vegetable also protect liver cells against toxins.

Experiments on human cells found the minerals and amino acids in asparagus can replacing those lost through drink, which can often lead to a headache. They also relieve stress on the liver.

But for the greatest, scientists at the Jeju National University in South Korea recommend serving the leaves as well as the tender shoots.

Researcher B Y Kim, said: "These results provide evidence of how the biological functions of asparagus can help alleviate alcohol hangover and protect liver cells."

Order asparagus for dinner New Year's Eve and eat it for breakfast New Year's Day. Hopefully, you will feel a lot better.

Raw Food for Dummies: Recipes and More!

Although I find the title of the Dummies books, well insulting, they do contain useful information in a user-friendly format.

Recently, we were sent Raw Food For Dummies by Cherie Soria and Dan Ladermann.

Celebrities like Sting, Madonna, and Woody Harrelson have drawn attention to the newest trend in eating: raw foods. To Fast or not to Fast?

Fasting is defined as "voluntarily not eating food for varying lengths of time." People fast for a variety of reasons from losing weight to spiritual practice. 

 Fasting makes my body feel good. I do not fast for long periods of times, sometimes I do juice fasts, sometimes just herbal tea; however, some doctors have expressed concern for what happens to our bodies during fasting.

LiveScience explains:

The side effects aren't surprising, said registered dietitian Joy Dubost, a spokeperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

"You're putting the body under tremendous stress," she said.

Within the first 24-48 hours of calorie deprivation, the body depletes its glycogen stores from muscles and the liver -- basically, that's the carbohydrate stores that provide quick energy, Dubost said. Then it starts breaking down protein within muscles and fat to produce energy. During that process, the body's metabolism slows down in order to conserve energy, she said. Meanwhile, hormonal reactions will fluctuate...

While Dubost sees no benefits in complete fasts, others think that a milder form of fasting could help certain populations. Intermittent fasting, proponents say, produces a milder stress on the body similar to exercise.

"Exercise is an energetic stress, where you have a marked increase in energy expenditure," said Mark Mattson, chief of the laboratory of neurosciences at the National Institute on Aging. "Conversely, fasting for even a relatively short period of time like 16-24 hours also puts an energetic stress on the body, but in kind of the opposite way, through reduced energy availability."

And the adaptive responses to that mild stress of not having food? In animal studies, Mattson and other researchers have found positive changes in nerve cells. Intermittent fasting can protect neurons from becoming damaged by oxidative stress, for example, and better regulate glucose.

Most Americans overeat or eat food lacking in quality nutrition. Fasting helps cleanse the body and focus eating on more healthy choices, in my experience. Extreme fasting could be detrimental, but fasting is one of the "oldest therapies in medicine". It is always good to consult health care practitioner and listen to your body.

I highly recommend short fasts (12-18 hours) during the holiday season to compensate for all the feasting!

Eat Miso Soup: 50% Reduced Risk of Breast Cancer

After experiencing food poisoning Monday evening, all I wanted to put into my tender tummy was miso soup. When I opened up the miso paste, there was this statement: "Miso soup consumption linked with up to 50% reduced risk of breast cancer." I had not heard of this before!

According to a study conducted nine years ago that was reported in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. WebMD explains,

In it, Yamamoto and colleagues identified 21,852 women between the ages of 40 and 59 and surveyed them about various lifestyle issues, including their diet.

They traced the women 10 years later and found that 179 had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Again, they surveyed all the women about their diet -- how frequently they ate miso soup and soy foods such as soybeans and tofu. The researchers then calculated the amount of isoflavones consumed.

Researchers found that:

  • 75% of the women consumed miso soup almost daily; of those, 23% had one cup per day, 43% had two, and 34% had three or more per day.
  • 45% had soy foods almost daily, 35% ate soy foods three or four times a week, 17% had it one or two times a week, 2% almost never ate soy foods.
  • Women with the most isoflavones in their diet had the lowest risk of breast cancer. This was especially true of postmenopausal women.
  • Eating soy foods in general, however, did not lower the risk of breast cancer.
  • Other traditional eating habits -- eating more rice, pickles, vegetables, and fish -- were also linked with lower breast cancer risk.
  • Even those who drank the least miso soup still got 250 times more isoflavones in their diet than does the typical U.S. woman.
  • I think I will eat more miso!

    EWG: "Every American eats an estimated 193 pounds of genetically engineered food annually"

    According to a new study by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), "Every American eats an estimated 193 pounds of genetically engineered food annually." That's more than the average American weighs. The scary part is we don't yet know the health impacts of such GMO consumption. EWG explains:

    These figures raise a question: If you were planning on eating your body weight of anything in a year, wouldn't you want tomake sure it was safe to eat?

    Shockingly, virtually no long-term health studies have been done on consumption of genetically engineered food.

    And there aren't likely to be any such studies anytime soon. The government isn't doing this kind of research and is not requiring it of the food industry. It isn't even making it possible for independent scientists to do it, since under the law, those who hold patents on genetically engineered food get to decide in most cases what testing can - and cannot - be conducted.

    Kellogg's: Remove Artificial Food Dyes from Kids' Snacks

    Just yesterday, we blasted a candy company for making health claims on the front of a package containing artificial food dyes suspected of causing health problems like cancer and ADHD. Today, we came across this petition "Tell Kellogg's: Artificial Food Dyes Don't Belong in Our Kids' Fruit Snacks"

    We're both moms who care a lot about the food our kids eat. Kellogg's Fruit Flavored Snacks contain artificial colors made from artificial food dyes that have been linked to allergies and hyperactivity in some children. Kids like fruit snacks, particularly brightly colored ones marketed to them in the shapes of their favorite movie characters. Moms may choose to give their kids fruit snacks because they think they are healthier than candy -- but they're not.

    Erica says, "I was absolutely one of those moms that gave both of my children fruit snacks thinking it was better than candy. At the time, I wasn't aware of the potential harm from food dyes and didn't think twice because the word 'fruit' was attached. Now, I know better."

    Although I would never let my children eat Kellogg's "fruit" snacks, millions of children do. Please sign this petition!

    Toxic Halloween: Gimbal's Fine Candy Full of Artificial Colors and Flavors

    Sometimes, I really wonder how we get certain products sent to us. We are a natural living blog!

    Halloween is rapidly approaching. It is a time when children and adults dress up in costumes and consume large amounts of candy. This celebration of ghosts and ghouls does not have to include toxic substances, but unfortunately, for most, the candy they consume is full of chemical colors and flavors.

    We were sent Gimbal's Fine Candies Gourmet Jelly Beans, 41 Flavors:

Eliminating these artificial colors from the diet of sensitive children may lower or eliminate their need for ADHD medications, according to a June 2008 article posted on CBSNews.com.

    DNA Damage
    A number of tests have shown that Red 40 given to mice can damage their DNA, according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest. Although some of the tests were negative, those involving the liver, colon and glandular stomach were positive. These results may not carry over to humans, but do show a potential harmful effect from consuming Red 40.

    The Center for Science in the Public Interest notes that the tests done in the 1970s using mice were problematic and not conclusive as to the potential cancer risk of consuming Red 40. Compounds in Red 40 have been linked to cancer, according to Columbia University Medical Center, including 4-aminobiphenyl and benzidine. Tests have also found cancer-causing contaminants in this food coloring, including p-cresidine and aniline.

    The outside of the Gimbal's package promotes the products as "Made with real fruit juice" and "A good source of antioxidant vitamin c". I think it should come with a warning about chemical colorants.

    We were sent more than just the jelly beans, but I am so disgusted, I won't even list them here.  I will not try this product. I will not let my children consume it either.

    Scientists Change Fruit and Vegetable Recommendations to 7 Servings Daily


    As an educator, the Five a Day campaign has been the focus of nutrition information. Forget the food groups of my youth, or even the more modern food pyramid...today, children are encouraged to eat five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. As much as this a challenge for many Americans, scientists have just raised the ante to seven a day.

    Daily Mail explains not only are seven servings better for your health, it makes you happier:

    They have discovered that people who eat between seven and eight portions a day felt more cheerful, loved and optimistic about the future.

    Researchers from the University of Warwick analysed surveys involving 80,000 Britons which included questions on their diet and general feelings.

    Each person was given a score between 0 and 10 based on their satisfaction with life.

    Bad weather and poor harvests push up food costs as experts say the era of low prices is over

    Those who ate more than eight portions a day got an average score of one point higher than people who didn't eat any.

    Professor Andrew Oswald from the Centre for Competitive Advantage in the Global Economy in the Department of Economics at the University of Warwick, said: 'This study has shown surprising results and I have decided it is prudent to eat more fruit and vegetables. I am keen to stay cheery.'...

    Their study, published in the journal Social Indicators Research, concludes: 'Our findings are consistent with the need for high levels of fruit-and-vegetable consumption for mental health and not merely for physical health.'

    The academics do not know exactly how fruit and veg may improve wellbeing.
    But they contain chemicals known as antioxidants which are thought to reduce stress levels.

    Recently several studies have found that children who eat more fruit and veg are less at risk of depression in later life.

    The link between nutrition, mental health, and physical health cannot be denied.  We are whole beings.
