100% Natural Planet Dog Eats: Tartar Control and Yumminess in Every Treat

Chicken-PotPie-Treats_sm.png
We love Planet Dog toys, but the truth is, my dogs prefer treats to toys any day! Planet Dog Eats is a line of treats that are wheat, corn, and soy free. They come in two flavors:

  1. Planet Dog eats - Chicken & Pumpkin Pot Pie

  2. Planet Dog eats - P B & J

New bakery, new flavors, same yum. Made by our new baking partner, Polka Dog Bakery...100% natural and helps to supports digestion. Wheat, corn and soy free. No wheat gluten.

My dog gave these treats a four paws up! They are small in size, but he didn't seem to mind. In fact, he followed me whining for more.

The only way these treats could be better is if they were made from organically grown ingredients.

Really Natural Pets: Planet Dog Orbee Balls

Planet_dog_orbee.jpg
Have you been in a pet store lately? The amount of plastic junkie toys for our pets is just as bad as what is designed for our children. Fortunately, Planet Dog to the rescue!

Since incorporating in 1997, we have been known as the industry's leading socially responsible, values-based design house, bringing people and dogs together for fun and mutual support....

Our mission is to amuse, explore, support, innovate, create, educate, celebrate and philanthropate... all in the name of the dog. We "romp the romp" by providing financial resources to those in need, educating consumers about canine-related issues, creating an array of non-toxic and recyclable products, and keeping the tails of "our pack" wagging.

We were sent two great Planet Dog balls!

These are great dog balls: very sturdy, easy to throw, easy to retrieve! My dogs love them (so do my kids).

Green Pets: Planet Dog Toys Thinking Globally & Acting Doggedly

planet_dog.jpg
Pet toys are typically made from the cheapest materials. They do not hold up to the demands of humans and dogs, and they end up in landfills. In fact, I usually will not buy a dog toy, as a stick can serve the same purpose, then again, a stick dog is an annoying dog.  My children, however, enjoy having toys for their dogs (I don't think the dogs mind).

Planet Dog's mission is "to amuse, explore, support, innovate, create, educate, celebrate, & philanthropate...all in the name of the dog". We (humans and canines) love Planet Dog!

We tried out two Planet Dog products:
Planet Dog Wood Chuck Ball Toss Toy with RecycleBall:

Engineered with sustainable bamboo and reused cork scraps. A sleek take on other ball-tossing devices, Wood Chuck's® bamboo core offers strength and maximum chuck-ability with an ergonomic cork handle for comfort and grip-ability throw, after throw. Wood Chuck's® 4-pronged claw coupled with the pliant nature of our Orbee-Tuff® products make it a cinch to grab and throw. Goes the distance every time. Wood Chuck® is offered with Orbee-Tuff® RecycleBALL®. Can be used with Planet Dog's Orbee-Tuff® 2.5" toys or certain unpressurized standard tennis balls.

Planet Dog Orbee-Tuff Glow for Good Ball:
100-Percent of the sales of our doggie-durable, buoyant, bouncy, minty Glow for Good Ball go directly to the Planet Dog Foundation, our not-for-profit arm whose mission is to support canine service programs.

These are great, durable toys. I really like them both!  The ball tosser really flings the ball far, allowing the dogs to get a great work out running up and down the hill as I toss it. The glow-in-the-dark ball is fun for nighttime ball play!

Clean + Green Furniture Refresher Cleans and Eliminates Pet Odors Naturally

clean_green_furniture_refresher.jpg
We have some very stinky dog beds on our deck.   I sometimes sprinkle them with baking soda to eliminate odors. Clean + Green Furniture Refresher Odor Eliminator for Dogs offers another solution:

Powerful and Effective
Professional strength. Used by pet and cleaning professionals. Exclusive Patented Encapsulation Technology and Advanced Eliminator Formula.

All Natural Ingredients:
Cane sugar derivatives, proprietary botanical extracts and hydrated cellulose (cleaning agents), purified water and nitrogen propellant (non-flammable & eco friendly.)

Quick and Easy
Works on contact. Just spray - no need to soak, scrub or rinse.

Safe and Eco Friendly
Safe on all water-safe surfaces. Environmentally Responsible Formulation: non-toxic, non-flammable, non-corrosive, non-carcinogenic, biodegradable and natural propellant.

This product is even suppose to eliminate skunk odor, but I don't think it is safe to spray directly on dog fur.

I sprayed our stinky dog beds, and Clean + Green Furniture Refresher Odor Eliminator for Dogs did seem to help. I am wary of aerosol cans though, even though the National Aerosol Association assures us they do not deplete the ozone layer. Even so, they can be trickier to recycle, so I would prefer to see this product in a pump spray.

5 Things Not to Feed Your Dog or Cat

dog.jpg

You've probably heard that chocolate is bad for dogs, but that is not all that can harm your pet. I was alarmed to read in "How the Doctor Almost Killed Her Dog" about all of the common human medicines and foods that can be very harmful to pets. Here's a list you'll want to remember to avoid:
  1. Ibuprofen/Motrin
  2. Acetaminophen/Tylenol
  3. Dark chocolate
  4. Grapes and raisins
  5. Onions
  6. Macademia nuts
  7. Xylitol and other artificial sweeteners
From kidney failure to damaging the central nervous system, we have to remember our pets are not humans.

5 Green Deals: Hot, Flat, and Crowded; Hemp Dog Collar; Organic Cotton Mattress Pad, Recycled Cotton Rug, Biodegradable Mixing Bowls

hot_flat_and_crowded.jpg
1. Hot, Flat, and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution--and How It Can Renew America $27.95 $3.53:

Friedman explains how global warming, rapidly growing populations, and the astonishing expansion of the world's middle class through globalization have produced a planet that is "hot, flat, and crowded." Already the earth is being affected in ways that threaten to make it dangerously unstable. In just a few years, it will be too late to fix things--unless the United States steps up now and takes the lead in a worldwide effort to replace our wasteful, inefficient energy practices with a strategy for clean energy, energy efficiency, and conservation that Friedman calls Code Green.

This is a great challenge, Friedman explains, but also a great opportunity, and one that America cannot afford to miss. Not only is American leadership the key to the healing of the earth; it is also our best strategy for the renewal of America.

Really Natural Pets: Certified Organic Anti-Fungal, Anti-Bacterial, Anti-Itching Shampoo Bar by Dermagic

dermagic shampoo bar.jpg
Dermagic makes products that really work and are good for dogs with stubborn skin problems. We've always used oatmeal baths on our dogs when their skin is flared up from flea infestations, but Dermagic offers certified organic herbal remedies that are easier to use than oatmeal and smell wonderful.

When you have a wriggly pup in the sink, one hand does double duty with a shampoo bar! Our bars lather beautifully with no sulfates, rinse easily and cleanly, they're portable (no spills!) and they smell wonderful. You and your pets will love these, and one 3.5 oz bar will outlast a 16-ounce bottle of liquid shampoo for a great value too! ((NOT RECOMMENDED FOR CATS.)

These wonderful shampoo bars are handmade in the Pacific Northwest from certified organic ingredients. And for every 10 shampoo bars purchased, a tree is planted!

I was a little concerned a shampoo bar would not allow me to truly lather my dog's fur thoroughly, but I found the bar easy to use. In fact, my dog liked the way it felt like a massage as I rubbed it into his fur.

I do think that almost $8 a bar is a little pricey when you have big dogs. A bottle of Dr. Bronner's lasts much longer and is cheaper. It is my usual doggie shampoo.

Salmonella Pet Food Recall: 74,700 Hartz Natural Beef Dog Treats

51OKCwxs3fL._AA300_.jpg
In the latest salmonella scare, it is not eggs but dog treats that have fallen victim. 74,700 bags of Hartz Naturals Beef Dog Treats have been voluntarily recalled. Medical News Today reports:

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) announced that The Hartz Mountain Corporation has voluntarily recalled 74,800 8-ounce bags of Hartz Naturals Real Beef Treats for Dogs which may be tained with Salmonella. Infection with salmonella, known as salmonellosis, can affect pets, such as dogs and cats, as well as humans - it is caused by Salmonella bacteria. Pets may develop gastroenteritis, spontaneous abortions, and septicemia. It is a zoonotic disease; it can be transmitted from the dog to a human.

Your dog is much better snacking on 100% natural treats rather than Hartz products anyways.

Natural Dog and Cat Treats Made from Wild, Sustainable Icelandic Haddock

wishes-231x300.jpg
There were some lucky dogs in my home when we opened up our sample of The Honest Kitchen Wishes treats.

Wishes are suitable for both cats and dogs, and can be used as a general reward or aid to training. Wishes are made with 100% wild caught Haddock from Iceland using sustainable fishing practices.

Iceland places a strong emphasis on the protection of its marine habitats and manages the waters off its coasts to prevent over-fishing. Icelandic haddock stocks have risen dramatically in the past 5 years.

They're grain-free, delicious and perfect for sensitive pets who suffer from allergies or intolerance to certain foods such as grains and proteins.

Ingredients

100% human-grade, wild caught Icelandic Haddock.

When you open this bag, the fish smell exudes, which was my first clue these treats are what they claim to be. My dogs hungrily ate these treats begging for more. My only complaint is the bag is a little small when you have three large dogs, but these are high quality treats!

Natural Pet: Holistic Select Nourish Puppy Health Food

holistic select.png
My dogs have tried Holistic Select dog food before with favorable results, now it's our 124-pound puppy's turn to review "beyond natural, beyond holistic" food.

Holistic Select Nourish Puppy Health-Anchovy, Sardine & Chicken Meals Recipe was gobbled right up by our puppy. He actually had just eaten his regular breakfast and had a full belly, but when I poured Holistic Select into his bowl, he couldn't resist chowing down.  He loved it!

Ingredients: Anchovy & Sardine Meal, Ground Brown Rice, Ground White Rice, Chicken Fat (Preserved with Natural Mixed Tocopherols), Chicken Meal, Pork Meal, Oatmeal, Dried Beet Pulp, Flaxseed, Dried Egg Product, Menhaden Fish Oil, Carrots, Sun-Cured Alfalfa, Peas, Salt, Potassium Chloride, Organic Quinoa, Apples, Blueberries, Cranberries, Dried Kelp, Yucca Schidigera Extract, DL-Methionine, Vitamins [Beta-Carotene, Vitamin A Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin E Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, d-Calcium Pantothenate, Niacin Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Thiamine Mononitrate, Folic Acid, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Biotin], Minerals [Polysaccharide Complexes of Zinc, Iron, Manganese and Copper, Cobalt Carbonate, Potassium Iodate, Sodium Selenite], Choline Chloride, Lecithin, Rosemary Extract, Inulin, L-Carnitine, Dried Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, Enterococcus faecium, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus licheniformis, Aspergillus oryzae and Aspergillus niger Fermentation Products, Mixed Tocopherols (a natural preservative).
What's in your puppy's food? I bet you can't pronounce most of the ingredients. It's actually really gross what is put in pet food, and many of the ingredients are toxic. You don't have to worry about Holistic Select ingredients, and the puppy food also comes in a canned version.

Doggy and Me Yoga: Doga

dogyoga.jpg
If you are a parent, you've probably heard about Mommy and Me yoga classes, but what about our canine friends? The New York Times reports explains about Doga: Yoga for Dogs:

Appropriate or not, this is how it works: Doga combines massage and meditation with gentle stretching for dogs and their human partners. In chaturanga, dogs sit with their front paws in the air while their human partners provide support. In an "upward-paw pose," or sun salutation, owners lift dogs onto their hind legs. In a resting pose, the person reclines, with legs slightly bent over the dog's torso, bolster-style, to relieve pressure on the spine.

I'm not sure my dogs would comply, and they would probably spend their time sniffing other dogs in class. Besides, they already spend a lot of time in their version of corpse pose.
