Green Back-to-School Supplies at Office Depot

We're sad to say it, but summer is nearly over. If you're heading back to school, you may want to think about purchasing green and eco-friendlier school supplies this year.

A number of major retailers (including Home Depot, Wal-Mart, and Amazon) have started stocking "green" merchandise for customers who prefer eco-friendly purchasing options.
nav_logo.gifOffice Depot is no exception, with a whole section of their website devoted to a green buying guide.

475224_sk_lg.jpgThe green school supplies buying guide includes tips on what products are out there, and ways in which you can minimize the environmental impact of your purchases. Suggestions include notebooks made from recycled and post-consumer recycled paper, alternative fiber paper products made from sugarcane and banana fiber, and certified AP non-toxic pencils, crayons and paints and solar powered calculators.

The Buy Green site includes a description of the criteria Office Depot utilizes for selecting greener products and a a detailed FAQ that breaks down terminology for different levels of recycled content, labeling, and certifications.

Sustainable Harvest International - Stonyfield Yogurt Promotion

PlantingHopeSM.jpg

Looking for ways to support sustainable farming and rainforest conservation -- all before you've even finished your breakfast? Really Natural reader (and Sustainable Harvest International summer intern Jessica Schessler just wrote in about a promotion from Stonyfield Farm and Sustainable Harvest International that will allow you to do just that.

Sustainable Harvest International (SHI) is a nonprofit organization that works with farmers in Central America to teach alternatives to slash and burn farming.

Since 1997, SHI has worked with nearly 1,000 families and 900 students in Honduras, Panama, Belize and Nicaragua to

* Plant more than 2,000,000 trees.
* Convert 6,000 acres to sustainable uses, thereby saving 30,000 acres from slash-and-burn destruction.
* Improve nutrition through the establishment of more than 200 organic vegetable gardens.
* Increase farm income up to 800%.
* Build165 wood-conserving stoves (saving 1,650 trees per year)

SHI's work saves rainforests; it also leaves the farmers and their families with enough organic crops to feed themselves and sell extra crops for income.

BidWithLid2007.gifThis summer, SHI has joined with Stonyfield Farm yogurt to raise money for their work. Through Stonyfield Farm's Bid with Your Lid program, SHI will receive $20,000 in donations, plus up to $40,000 more based on yogurt-eaters' votes. You can go to the Stonyfield Farm website and receive a coupon for a free yogurt, and at the same time cast a vote for Sustainable Harvest International. You can also redeem yogurt tops and cast one vote for each top you redeem (e.g. 10 tops equals 10 votes, 20 tops equals 20 votes, etc.)

We're big fans of Stonyfield Farm organic yogurt for breakfast -- with homemade granola and wheat germ or mixed into a smoothie. And we think Sustainable Harvest International is an organization worth supporting. So it's win-win.

Get your coupon for a free Stonyfield Farmyogurt and cast your vote for SHI.

Ecopad, Meet Ecopod (and Get 10% Off, Courtesy of Grist)

Our friends at Single Serve Coffee have blogged about Ecopad, a refillable coffee filter for the Senseo. The refillable pod allows you to enjoy your single serve coffee maker, without worrying about the waste of disposable coffee pods.

Well, move over, Ecopad. And meet Ecopod, the next generation in trash compaction. Or the first generation in recyclable compaction. Or a really cool gadget for your kitchen. Whatever you call it, it does look pretty cool.

Produced by the unusual partnership of BMW DesignworksUSA, Williams-Sonoma, dwell magazine and musician Jack Johnson, Ecopod has removable storage containers for paper, plastic bags, glass bottles and other recyclables. Insert aluminum cans and plastic bottles and step on the pedal to hear what the website calls "the sweet sound of compaction" as they're flattened into a portable pod for curbside collection.

Enter the coupon code GOGRIST in the Promotion Box and receive 10% when you order online.

Fall Foliage Without the Raking: Eleni's Cookies

Okay, this is stretching the limits of "natural, wholesome and organic" but there are some things we just can't resist. Like these cute little squirrel cookies, sitting on a pile of autumn leaves and acorns. Yep. They are irresistable.

Eleni's of New York City offers these "Fall Foliage" cookies in two varieties - ginger spice and sugar. Squirrels, acorns, and bright colored leaves you don't have to rake. What more could you ask?

Eleni's uses all natural ingredients - you know, sugar, butter, flour. So while the cookies aren't "organic," they should at least get points for "wholesomeness." And after all that raking outside, don't you deserve a little treat?

Eleni's is currently offering a 10% discount on all web orders delivered by October 12th. Enter promotion code FALLFOLIAGE06 at check out. And save us a squirrel!

Available at Eleni's.

Timberland "Pacific Grove" Mary Janes at Half Price

maryjane.jpgSpeaking of Timberland, the company's Pacific Grove Mary Janes, a shoe we can highly recommend, is currently on sale at Amazon for $34.90, more than half off the original price.

Sort of a sneaker, sort of a shoe. Just the right blend of feminine and fabulous, especially in the acid yellow-green color they've got featured. Kick ass, sustainably, in these sweethearts. Get 'em while they're hot.
