Green Home Remodeling: Zero VOC Natura Paint by Benjamin Moore

natura.gif Recently, my daughter decided she was finished with her Pepto-Bismol pink bedroom walls. It was a happy day in my life, as I have detested the color since she picked it out at three-years-old. As an eight-year-old, she has chose Benjamin Moore Natura Paint in blue orchid. Natura is a zero VOC, virtually odorless, acrylic paint.
Virtually odorless Natura paint is the greenest and safest paint available in the market. In independent third party testing, Natura paint has the lowest total VOC emissions of any national paint brand tested. Available in any color, Natura also outperforms the competition by being the safest paint for your family without compromising performance or color selection.

The paint smell was very mild as we applied it, and I felt comfortable letting my daughter help. I had chosen the semi-gloss, thinking this would be easier to clean in her room; however, it was more difficult to apply than the flat would have been. In places, drips occurred even when applying with a roller. Next time, we will use the flat or eggshell finish.

I also had MAJOR problems with Benjamin Moore Natura paint (a green tinted color; no problem with the white ceiling paint). The paint induced immediate, terrible headaches that I confirmed were experienced by many folks when I did an Internet search. I was able to encapsulate the odor with Zinnser BIN (denatured alcohol-based) shellac.

Unfortunately, the first hot, humid day appeared to fracture the shellac coating and the smell returned as strong as ever and did not lessen at all in the subsequent 3 months. Last weekend, I tore down all the walls in that room and am now reconstructing them. The good news: The smell is completely gone and I can finally be in the room.

No more Natura for me!!!!!!!!!!

I have major issues with Benjamin Moore’s Natura paint. I painted 13 months ago, and I am STILL waiting for the outgassing to stop (which is insane considering that this paint is marketed as Zero VOC). We have to air out the house more than once a day with strong fans and all windows open for several hours a day. Even though I have found dozens of similar complaints with some people going as far as replacing the sheet rock, or moving out of their homes, Benjamin Moore claims to know nothing about the problem. I suspect, since some people are happy with their Natura paint, that Benjamin Moore has had some bad paint batches. Believe me, this is 100 times stronger (even a bit fishy smelling) than regular paint, but the fact that it doesn’t seem to ever completely outgas is what is most annoying.
